Batik and collages by Penny Laird Elizabeth Rashley is a self-taught linocut artist living and working in Newton Abbot. About twenty years ago, someone suggested that she try lino-cutting instead of colouring in large areas of black ink in her pen and ink designs. Lino-cutting quickly became a hobby and a means of expressing her inner world whilst bringing up her three children. Over the years she has developed her craft from using the back of a spoon to print, to winding her blocks through an old mangle, to finally owning her own Victorian printing press which she found on ebay. Likewise her art has evolved from producing black and white images to exploring the endless possibilities of colour printing. She now produces colour reduction prints whereby all the colours of the picture are printed in succession from one lino block which is cut away as each colour is printed, leaving a reduced block at the end of the process. This means that the initial edition is finite and the printing of an image is a one-off event that cannot be repeated later. Elizabeth has a passion for shape and pattern and recurrent themes in her work are the female form, nature and domesticity.
