Karen attended Camberwell College of Arts and Crafts, where her tutors were the prominent potters Colin Pearson and Janice Tchalenko. She graduated in 1983 and established a studio in South London and has been making and exhibiting ceramics ever since. She has had many UK exhibitions, as well as shows in France, Canada and the US. Karen is now based in Lincolnshire. Karen’s pots are vividly coloured and decorated with flowing mainly female figurative nudes and faces wrapped around a diverse range of vases, bowls, mugs and plates. The unique figurative style portrays curvy fleshy figures influenced by Greek antiquity and the colours of the impressionists. She uses brightly coloured slips painted onto white earthenware and glazed with a transparent glaze to give a lustrous finish, with the addition of decals to give the work an old fashion feel. Originally a hand builder and a slip caster, she is now working with thrown shapes. The gallery has original work by Karen Atherley for sale. (NB - All work is suitable for practical use. Hand wash)
