I live and work in Somerset. I studied at the Ruskin School of Fine Art (MA Oxon) and UWE Bristol (MA Media). On the rebound from studying I went to Florence to spend some time at the Florence Academy of Art, doing portraiture. There I learnt a completely new way of working, using a 17C palette, with 3 primary colours (vermillion, yellow ochre, cobalt blue), black and white. This style can be seen in the painting ‘Jean Martin contemplates her life’, which is on display at Gallery @ 500ft at the time of writing. My heroes have always been Goya, Rembrandt and Lucien Freud. I do life drawing regularly as an essential part of my practice. In my life paintings I try to capture the intensification of the human shape, working over and over on the same sheet, the figures working together sometimes to create a sort of orgy! John Singer Sargent said to his pupil in the early 1900’s  “paint 50 portraits and you will learn to paint the human face” so I set about my project (not on display here) and so far I have done 40 family members and exhibit them together as one piece called “I am the Family Face: Flesh Perishes, I Live On”. I have managed to represent 5 generations from my grandparents to my grandchildren.
