Fish bowl by Roger Cockram Batik and collages by Penny Laird Roger Cockram is an innovative potter who has been working in North Devon for many years and, in doing so, has developed his own individual approach to ceramics and - along the way - an international reputation for his work. He studied ceramics at Harrow School of Art, gaining his Diploma in 1975. His work is distinctive as it centres on ideas derived from observations of the natural world of water. Its movements and rhythms, its colours and textures are major preoccupations and the influences of this environment both on the terrain around it and the life found in it, also figure strongly in Roger’s work. His work results in various vessel forms, often quite large, sometimes incised and involving modelling and painting. He uses several sponged layers of vitreous slips and various matt and gloss glazes. These often bleed up through one another during the firing to give a strong sense of depth to the surface.
