My work is often described as “energetic and dynamic”.  Inspiration comes from my love of the natural landscape, in particular my native South Devon coastline.  My approach is intuitive and spontaneous.  I try to capture the ‘essence’ of a place through memory and observation, sometimes using quick sketches and photography.  My paintings embody a ‘freeze-frame’ of natural phenomena and are an emotional response to my surroundings.  Sometimes it’s just a sensation of something I need to interpret using colours, textures and patterns. To enable me to capture fluidity and movement in my work I like to work quickly with water-based acrylics or thinned oils.  The stretched canvas is often placed on the floor so that I can approach it from all four sides.  Standing over a canvas rather than placing it on an easel eliminates the need for a horizon and makes the painting have an ‘all over’ quality to it.  Gravity often plays a part in the flow of paint captured.   The process of painting is important to me.  The qualities of the paint itself are explored, as are the accidental marks and splashes that become part of the painting.   There is a gestural approach in my work that lends itself well to mark-making on a large scale.   Large gestures with big brushes or small flicking gestures or simply letting the paint drip combine to capture the energy.
